Tech startup FourSquare has come top of an Entrepreneur Magazine list of “brilliant ideas”. While it’s a little worrying that a social network is the most brilliant entrepreneurial idea on the planet at the moment, it does highlight an opportunity for screen agencies.
FourSquare is an online service, running on mobile phones, that allows users to “check in” when they arrive at a location – a restaurant, a hotel, a visitor attraction, a workplace. In return, their friends can see where they are, user can receive rewards, such as money off, and they collect badges as part of a game.
It’s possible to leave “tips” at locations – suggestions either directly about the location or the neighbourhood. In the past couple of weeks I’ve received a suggestion from a stranger to try the sticky sweet and sour chicken strips at a local restaurant. They were, indeed, wonderful. Meanwhile, in Edinburgh, I checked into Starbucks to receive a suggestion that I try the whisky bar across the road for a real taste of Scotland. It was 10:30am, so I politely declined.
Anyone can add tips to any location, and Bravo TV in the US has been boosting their profile by leaving tips at places near show locations. It seems like it has interesting potential to promote a city’s film heritage in a way which might reach visitors who are otherwise disengaged.
Just an idea. Have a great weekend.
