Research firm IDC has delivered its estimates of the latest sales figures for tablet computers.

First up ? analysts predict a lot of them will be sold this year: 106 million is the current estimate (up from an earlier prediction of 85m). This comes hard on the heels of an Apple statement that it sold more iPads in Q4 2011 than Hewlett-Packard sold PCs in the same period (15.4m vs 14.7m). Given the iPad has been in existence for less than two years (really!) this is a remarkable achievement. The accelerated growth of tablet sales suggests a medium term tipping point where tablets will become the predominant computing device.

The breakdown of the numbers from IDC is interesting. Apple continued to dominate the market with around 55% of tablet sales, despite only having one product against a myriad other devices including a number of Android tablets, Blackberry?s Playbook and HP?s short lived Touchpad.

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, not yet available in the UK, has been the leader in the challenge. IDC estimates 4.7m sales of the Kindle Fire, driven by good marketing and a low price ($199). These figures have been disputed as Amazon don?t release sales figures for their devices. IHS, for example, has estimated a 3.6m share. Both figures would still make it the most used non-iPad tablet, edging out Samsung?s Galaxy Tab.

What these figures don?t reveal is how these devices are being used. App sales and anecdotal evidence reveal the iPad has become a business companion for many offering email, access to information, word processing, games, video and more. The Kindle Fire, however, has a much lower specification and therefore may primarily be being used as an attractive, colour eBook reader. This would mean that, for many businesses, the iPad will remain the primary target device for content for some time.

There?s good news for e-ink readers like Amazon?s Kindle too. There sales are still growing, albeit more slowly, driven by a very low price tag and sale points in Tesco and other major supermarkets.
